Bhubaneswar: Renowned neurosurgeon Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Kumar Mahapatra emphasized the pressing issue of the escalating number of Parkinson’s disease patients, advocating for a holistic approach to combat it. Speaking at an awareness event held by the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital on World Parkinson’s Disease Day, Prof. (Dr.) Mahapatra highlighted the pivotal role of dopamine hormone deficiency in triggering this progressive neurodegenerative condition. He underscored the hormone’s significance in regulating memory, sleep, concentration, and emotions, particularly noting its correlation with aging.

In addressing the gathering, Prof. (Dr.) Mahapatra emphasized the potential of adopting a balanced lifestyle, incorporating physical exercise, and maintaining a nutritious diet as effective strategies in managing Parkinson’s disease. The event also featured insights from distinguished figures such as Prof. (Dr.) Niraj Kumar, Head of Neurology at AIIMS, Hyderabad, Prof. (Dr.) Pusparaj Samantasinhar, Medical Superintendent of IMS and SUM Hospital, and Prof. (Dr.) Srimanta Patnaik, Associate Professor in the Neurology department.
