World Liver Day: AIIMS Conducts Patient Awareness and Interaction Programme
Bhubaneswar: Marking World Liver Day, the Gastroenterology Department at AIIMS Bhubaneswar today organized an informative session to educate patients about liver diseases and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Over 200 patients and their families attended the event in the OPD area of the Gastroenterology Department.
Dr. Manash Kumar Panigrahi, Additional Professor in the Department of Gastroenterology at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, pointed out that among the 4,000 to 5,000 monthly visitors; approximately 1,500 seek consultation for liver-related concerns. He stressed the preventability of liver diseases, with more than 90% being avoidable, and highlighted the significance of abstaining from alcohol, processed foods, and junk foods, as well as the importance of screening, hepatitis B vaccination, and regular exercise.
During the event, Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, emphasized the pivotal role of lifestyle choices in preventing liver diseases. He cautioned against the indiscriminate use of over-the-counter medications or alternative medicines for liver issues and urged patients to seek proper medical guidance.
Dr. Subash Chandra Samal, Head of the Department, along with faculty members, senior residents, and staff, actively participated in the event, reaffirming the department’s dedication to promoting liver health and preventing diseases.
The theme for this year’s World Liver Day, “Keep your liver healthy and disease-free,” aligns with the department’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness and provide specialized care. As part of its commitment, the department holds a dedicated Liver OPD every Wednesday for referred patients.
