Veterinary Doctors threaten to continue strike till fulfillment of demands

BERHAMPUR: The veterinary doctors of the District Fisheries and Animal Resources Department (F&ARD) have initiated a strike and protest in front of the District Headquarters to demand the fulfillment of their needs. This action began on Tuesday following a mass leave starting from January 18th, 2024. On February 12th, there was a discussion between the Veterinary Association and the Government, which proved unproductive. Consequently, the association has decided to continue their mass leave until their legitimate demands are met.
The association, in a memorandum, highlighted the fact that despite providing round-the-clock service without breaks, veterinary doctors are being denied their rightful claims. They endure blame and occasional assaults from the public. Despite 1910 sanctioned veterinary officer positions in the State, only 1300 doctors are currently handling the workload. Lack of promotional opportunities and salary increases for promotional posts have forced many to remain in the same position for over two decades, leading to demands for DACP and NPA benefits. Moreover, they are often required to work beyond regular hours and on public holidays.
Since January 18th, 2024, the service provided by the 22 Mobile Veterinary Units in the District has ceased. The prolonged delay by the State Government in addressing the issues faced by veterinarians is beginning to have adverse effects on the livelihoods of numerous livestock farmers. Many farmers and WSHG members are experiencing delays in receiving long-awaited subsidies.
