Tata Steel Receives CII’s GreenPro Ecolabel for Sustainable Automotive Flat Steel Product
Mumbai: In a significant move to strengthen its commitment to environmental responsibility, Tata Steel has achieved the GreenPro Ecolabelling Standard certification for its automotive flat steel products. The GreenPro ecolabel, developed by the Green Business Centre of the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), assesses the environmental friendliness of a product through a comprehensive framework, paving the way for excellence in environmental performance.
As part of the assessment process, Tata Steel’s automotive flat steel products underwent a thorough evaluation at every stage of their product lifecycle, resulting in measurable environmental benefits. This certification underscores the company’s dedication to sustainable practices and its contribution to the automotive industry’s shift towards eco-friendly manufacturing.
Rajiv Mangal, Vice President of Safety, Health, and Sustainability at Tata Steel, expressed pride in achieving the GreenPro Ecolabel certification, emphasizing the company’s commitment to producing environmentally friendly steel solutions. The recognition from CII validates Tata Steel’s continuous efforts to establish new sustainability standards in the steel industry, encompassing rigorous life cycle assessment studies and environment product declarations (EPDs) for key products.
Prabhat Kumar, Vice President of Marketing and Sales (Flat Products) at Tata Steel, highlighted how the GreenPro certification reinforces the company’s dedication to eco-friendly manufacturing. He mentioned that it strengthens Tata Steel’s position as a preferred supplier to the automotive industry, aligning with the industry’s transformation journey towards sustainability.
Over the past two decades, Tata Steel has solidified its standing as the preferred supplier to the automotive industry, providing hot-rolled (HR), cold-rolled (CR), and galvanized products to major automotive OEMs and ancillaries in India.
Tata Steel has been a trailblazer in the Indian steel industry by manufacturing sustainable steel solutions and obtaining environmental certification for its products. Currently, CII’s GreenPro certification has been awarded to steel rebars (Tata Tiscon), tubes (Tata Structura, Tata Pipes, Tata EzyFit), steel doors and windows (Tata Pravesh), and ground-granulated blast furnace slag (Tata Aggreto). The company has also published Environment Product Declarations (EPDs) for several products. Additionally, Tata Steel Europe holds the distinction of being the first steel manufacturer to become an approved Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) program operator in Europe.
To encourage customers to choose cleaner and greener products, Tata Steel conducts life cycle assessment studies for many of its products, evaluating their environmental impact across various stages of the product’s life cycle.
