Medical Milestone In Odisha: KIMS Doctors Successfully Treat 70-Year-Old’s Leaking Heart Valve With MitraClip Procedure

Bhubaneswar: The Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) has once again achieved remarkable milestones by providing cutting-edge care and treatment for complex medical cases. In a pioneering move for Odisha, KIMS cardiologists successfully performed the MitraClip procedure on a 70-year-old female patient to address a leaking heart valve.

The patient had experienced severe heart failure due to a leak in the mitral valve, one of the heart’s crucial valves responsible for maintaining proper blood flow direction. Given her high surgical risk for valve replacement, MitraClip therapy was proposed as an alternative to repair the leak.

The mitral valve regulates blood flow between the heart’s lower left chamber (ventricle) and upper left chamber (atrium). When the mitral valve fails to close correctly, it results in leakage, necessitating the heart to exert more effort to pump blood throughout the body, potentially leading to conditions like atrial fibrillation (AFib) or heart failure.

Previously unavailable in Odisha, the MitraClip procedure was successfully carried out by a team led by Assistant Professor Dr. Anupam Jena from the Department of Cardiac Science at KIMS.

MitraClip offers significant advantages over traditional open-heart surgery for mitral valve disease. Patients typically experience faster recovery, shorter hospital stays, and fewer complications. Moreover, patients report less post-procedural pain following catheter-based interventions. The patient recovered well from the procedure and was discharged in a stable condition after three days.

MitraClip, a minimally invasive device, is used to address mitral valve leaks. It is inserted through a small puncture in the groin, avoiding the need for open-chest surgery. Also known as transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER), this procedure spares patients from invasive chest procedures.

Previously, KIMS also pioneered the Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement (TMVR) procedure in the State to repair damaged valves.

Dr. Achyuta Samanta, the Founder of KIIT and KISS, extended his congratulations to the doctors for the successful procedure, highlighting KIMS’s commitment to delivering advanced care and treatment.
