Intense Heatwave and Humidity to Persist till May 2 in Odisha:IMD

Bhubaneswar: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) delivered grim news on Sunday, underscoring the persistent hot and humid grip Odisha finds itself in until at least May 2, 2024. Despite sporadic thunderstorm activity in certain districts, there’s been little relief from the scorching temperatures.

Umashankar Das, a scientist at IMD Bhubaneswar, shed light on the suffocating conditions prevailing, with humidity levels peaking at 71 percent in Bhubaneswar and 74 percent in Cuttack. Coastal Odisha isn’t spared either, with humidity levels consistently registering at 65 percent and above across the region.

In a disheartening prediction, Das mentioned that the twin cities experience particularly oppressive conditions until mid-morning, only to be followed by the unforgiving onslaught of heatwaves. There’s a glimmer of hope post-May 2, hinting at a potential dip in temperatures. However, ongoing thunderstorm activities, while present in pockets, have failed to alleviate the relentless heat or usher in cooler days.

Looking ahead, the forecast paints a picture of continued sweltering heat, especially in the interior regions of Odisha, with maximum temperatures projected to hover between 40 to 42 degrees Celsius in the days to come.
