Arthroscopic Surgery workshop in KIIMS, Supposed To Bring Revolutionary Changes In Healing Sports Injury

Bhubaneswar: While Odisha steadily transforming into a sports hub in the country, the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) has undertaken significant initiatives to provide advanced treatment for sports-related injuries, ensuring effective and speedy recovery for athletes. A recent cadaveric workshop on Arthroscopic Surgery, a revolutionary approach to joint-related treatments, showcased KIMS’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of sportspersons.

Arthroscopy, a minimally invasive surgical procedure involving small incisions in the body, facilitates swift recovery and is commonly employed for injuries to the knees, ankles, hips, shoulders, wrists, and elbows. The emphasis on arthroscopic surgery has proven to be a game-changer for athletes seeking quick and efficient treatment.

Dr. Debashish Mishra, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics and a renowned surgeon, highlighted the institute’s focus on specialized workshops addressing sports-related cadaveric surgery, particularly concentrating on comprehensive shoulder injury treatment and prevention.

In sports such as cricket, volleyball, basketball, and rugby, shoulder injuries are prevalent, and until recently, these injuries were not effectively treatable in Odisha. Dr. Mishra stressed the institute’s commitment to addressing the treatment and prevention of such injuries.

The workshop was organized as part of the fourth Annual Conference of the Odisha Arthroscopy Society, in collaboration with the Odisha Arthroscopy Society (OAS) under the auspices of the Odisha Orthopedics Association (OOA). Eminent orthopaedic surgeons from various locations conducted live surgeries, offering insights into cutting-edge procedures. Renowned surgeons like Dr. Senthil Velan R, Dr. Asish Acharya, and Dr. Swarnendu Samanta provided demonstrations, while Dr. Jitendra Maheswari and Dr. Shashank Mishra elaborated on the basics of shoulder surgery for young orthopaedic surgeons.

Dr. Mishra highlighted Odisha’s rapid evolution as a sporting powerhouse, attributing the progress to the focus and encouragement provided by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik towards sports. He emphasized the Chief Minister’s initiatives in prioritizing sports training and handling sports-related injuries, announcing KIMS’s plans to venture into fellowship programs and collaborations for extending the focus beyond shoulders to include other joints and comprehensive rehabilitation methods.
