Khelo India University Games: Assam CM Launches Mascot Ashtalakshmi For 2024 Edition
Guwahati: Building anticipation and excitement ahead of the fourth edition of the Khelo India University Games 2024, the Honorable Chief Minister of Assam, Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma, unveiled the logo and mascot, Ashtalakshmi – a vibrant butterfly, at a dazzling ceremony in Guwahati on Thursday.
Ashtalakshmi, symbolizing grace and the rich biodiversity of Northeast India, showcases cultural motifs and colors on its wings, offering a visually captivating representation of the region’s diverse beauty.
The event was graced by dignitaries including Nisith Pramanik, the Honorable Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, Nandita Garlosa, the Honorable Minister of Sports and Youth Welfare, Government of Assam, Kausar Jamil Hilaly, Secretary of the Sports and Youth Welfare Department, Government of Assam, along with prominent sports organizers and athletes from the eight Northeastern states.
The presence of sporting icons from the region, such as national medal-winning boxer Pwilao Basumatary, international shuttler Suraj Goala, international table tennis player Divyaj Rajkhowa, and Tripura judoka Rikson Debbarma, added to the occasion’s significance.
Reflecting on the vision of Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to invest in youth through sports, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized Assam’s commitment to youth development and its success in hosting major sporting events.
Expressing unwavering government support, Chief Minister Sarma looked forward to hosting over 5,000 participants and delegates for the prestigious event.
Addressing the gathering, Nisith Pramanik, the Honorable Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, commended the visionary initiative of Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed at fostering a thriving sporting culture nationwide. He praised Assam’s role under the leadership of Chief Minister Sarma in promoting sporting excellence and nurturing talent.
Highlighting the transformative power of sports in shaping lives, Pramanik drew inspiration from the achievements of athletes on platforms like the Asian Games.
Assam will host 16 disciplines during the Khelo India University Games 2024, showcasing its dedication to providing world-class sporting infrastructure. Other Northeastern states will host four events, including men’s boxing, weightlifting, wrestling, and yogasana.
