Driving Transformation: Gobinda Gaipai’s ‘Nukkad Nataks’ Spark Social Change with Backing from Tata Steel Foundation
Kalinganagar: Gobinda Gaipai, a 24-year-old resident of Mirigichara in the Gobarghati Panchayat, Sukinda block, Jajpur district, has devoted himself to catalyzing social transformation through the impactful medium of ‘Nukkad Natak’ (street plays). His journey was spurred by a personal tragedy – the loss of his brother due to alcohol abuse. This profound experience fueled Gobinda’s determination to prevent others from undergoing a similar fate.
Despite grappling with financial constraints, Gobinda’s family sustained themselves through goat farming and agriculture. His educational journey was supported by the Jyoti Fellowship from Tata Steel Foundation, which he received in 2008 and continued to benefit from until his graduation. During this period, Gobinda’s enthusiasm for cultural performances and role-plays caught the attention of Tata Steel Foundation, leading to an opportunity to raise awareness within the community.
The onset of the 2020 pandemic disrupted Gobinda’s plans to secure employment after completing his education. However, this setback only fortified his resolve to combat alcohol abuse and harmful substances. With the backing of Tata Steel Foundation, he formed a team of 10 individuals and embarked on a mission to educate and create awareness through ‘Nukkad Natak’ performances. Their efforts have reached over 150 panchayats in Odisha, leaving a meaningful impact on numerous lives.
Reflecting on the initiative, Gobinda Gaipai states, “After losing my brother, I felt an immense determination to raise awareness against alcohol and harmful substances. Through ‘Nukkad Natak,’ I aim to connect with as many individuals as possible. If only someone had reached out to my brother, perhaps I wouldn’t be mourning. With this initiative, my goal is to generate significant awareness in the region, preventing others from mourning their loved ones due to alcohol.”
Presently, Gobinda earns more than 3 lakh rupees from his ‘Nukkad Natak’ performances. Additionally, he engages in farming, and Tata Steel Foundation has provided essential supplies to enhance farming techniques, enabling him to earn over 2 lakh rupees annually.
Gobinda’s narrative epitomizes resilience, determination, and a profound commitment to instigating positive change within his community. His work serves as a guiding light of hope and inspiration for those endeavoring to make a constructive impact on the world.
