Bollywood Biggies Promote Lakshadweep Tourism Amid Diplomatic Tensions With Maldives
New Delhi: In the midst of escalating tensions between India and the Maldives triggered by a controversial tweet from a Maldivian minister regarding the Lakshadweep Islands, prominent Indian figures are utilizing social media platforms to express solidarity with the archipelago. They are also encouraging fellow citizens to explore the beauty of Indian islands.
The diplomatic rift emerged when a Maldivian minister accused India of singling out the nation, claiming that India struggled to compete with the Maldives in beach tourism. In response, Indian celebrities have taken a stand to advocate for Lakshadweep and showcase the diverse and captivating allure of Indian islands.
Renowned Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, for instance, used social media to express his astonishment at the derogatory remarks made by some Maldivian public figures. He highlighted the irony of such comments coming from a country that receives the highest number of Indian tourists. Emphasizing the need to uphold dignity, Akshay urged people to support domestic tourism, stating, “We are good to our neighbors, but why should we tolerate such unprovoked hate? I’ve visited the Maldives many times and always praised it, but dignity comes first. Let us collectively decide to #ExploreIndianIslands and promote our own tourism.”
