AFRICAN PATIENT UNDERGOES SUCCESSFUL ENDOSCOPIC SURGERY AT SUMUM
Bhubaneswar: Surgeons at SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) recently performed endoscopic surgery on an elderly African national, showcasing the hospital’s potential for medical tourism expansion. Joseph Youmsi, an 80-year-old retired judge of the Supreme Court of Cameroon, presented with severe headaches and nasal obstruction, indicative of sinus disease necessitating surgical intervention. Following imaging diagnostics, Dr. Radhamadhab Sahu, Senior Consultant and Head of ENT and Skull Base Surgery, conducted an endoscopic nasal surgery. Mr. Youmsi recovered satisfactorily and was discharged on Wednesday.
Dr. Sahu explained that symptoms such as nasal blockage, congestion, breathing difficulties, sleep disturbances, snoring, and exertional breathing issues are indicative of nasal obstruction. While many cases can be managed medically, surgical intervention becomes necessary in certain instances to alleviate patient discomfort. Dr. Sahu elaborated on the surgical procedures involved, including functional endoscopic sinus surgery, correction of deviated septum, and minor turbinate reduction, which effectively address chronic sinus diseases.
Despite the procedure being routine, Dr. Sahu emphasized the need for careful execution, particularly given the patient’s advanced age. He highlighted the influx of international patients and NRIs seeking treatment at SUMUM, attributing it to the hospital’s excellent surgical outcomes, cost-effectiveness, and access to state-of-the-art medical technology.
