1000 private madrassas in Assam face imminent closure
Guwahati: Over 1000 private madrassas in Assam face imminent closure, following an announcement by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, according to The Statesman. The Assam government has decided to transform these private religious educational institutions into general schools.
Recognizing the protection afforded to these minority community institutions by the Indian Constitution, the Assam government intends to engage in negotiations for their closure and subsequent transformation. Sarma highlighted that government-operated madrassas had already undergone closure and conversion into secular educational facilities.
Moreover, the Chief Minister emphasized the endorsement of the census by all five Assamese Muslim communities in the state. During a New Year meeting with reporters, he stated that his government plans to conduct a fresh census of Assamese Muslims, slated for completion by the end of 2024.
