New Delhi: Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien faced suspension from the Rajya Sabha for the rest of the winter session due to what was deemed as “ignoble misconduct.” This action followed a heated confrontation between Derek and the Rajya Sabha chairman amidst the chaos in the Lok Sabha regarding the recent security breach in Parliament.
Jagdeep Dhankhar, the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, asserted that Derek O’Brien had entered the well of the House, vociferously shouted slogans, and disrupted the proceedings. This disruption occurred as the opposition brought attention to the security breach incident from the previous day. In response to Derek’s actions, Dhankhar instructed the TMC MP to leave the House immediately, characterizing his conduct as a “defiance” of the Chair and deeming it “serious misconduct.”
Subsequently, the Upper House unanimously passed a motion to suspend Derek O’Brien for the remainder of the session. Earlier in the day, Rajya Sabha proceedings had been adjourned as opposition MPs stormed the house, demanding a discussion on the security breach incident that had transpired in Parliament.
