Bhubaneswar: Rufus B. Rodriguez, a respected Member of the House of Representatives of the Philippines, was so inspired by the objectives and functioning of the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) in Bhubaneswar that he made an emotional declaration, saying, “I intend to introduce a legislative proposal in Congress to establish a school similar to KISS that offers cost-free education to children belonging to indigenous communities.
He lauded Dr. Achyuta Samanta, the visionary behind KIIT and KISS, commending his efforts in advocating for tribal communities and providing free education to numerous indigenous children. Extending an invitation to Dr. Samanta to visit the Philippines, he sought his expertise in establishing the proposed institute there.
Drawing inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi and his principles, he emphasized that KISS and Dr. Samanta epitomize altruistic commitment and service to society. He noted that Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy on social service finds genuine expression in the initiatives undertaken by KISS.

Expressing his appreciation, he remarked on the longstanding and positive relationship between India and the Philippines. He highlighted the cultural and traditional parallels shared by both nations, emphasizing the significance of the name ‘Kalinga’ in the Philippines, particularly as it represents one of the states, the ‘State of Kalinga.’During his welcome speech, Dr. Samanta acknowledged the yeomen services provided by Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) in empowering tribal communities and fulfilling the aspirations of tribal children.
The event was graced by the presence of Pro-Chancellor KISS-DU Prof. Amareshwar Galla, Vice Chancellor Prof. Deepak Kumar Behera, Registrar Dr. P. K. Routray, and other distinguished officials from KISS.
