Bhubaneswar: At the Phulnakhara campus of the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, a remarkable surgical feat was achieved as a team of skilled surgeons successfully excised a vascular tumor from the nose of a 16-year-old boy utilizing the cutting-edge endoscopic endonasal approach.
The patient presented with a challenging case of a vascular tumor, identified as Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma, which extended up to the skull base. Professor (Dr.) Khageswar Rout, the distinguished head of the ENT Department at the hospital, spearheaded the surgical endeavor.
Given the patient’s tender age and the potential for facial scarring and deformity with conventional open surgery, the decision was made to adopt the minimally invasive endoscopic endonasal procedure. This approach, leveraging advanced medical instruments, offered a less invasive alternative.
Post-surgery, the patient experienced a smooth recovery, swiftly resuming his daily activities without any hindrance. Professor (Dr.) Rout conveyed the family’s profound gratitude for the successful outcome, expressing their satisfaction with the medical team’s expertise.
The surgical team, under the leadership of Professor (Dr.) Rout, comprised Dr. Bibekananda Acharya, an esteemed Assistant Professor, alongside Dr. Subrat Chandan Pradhan and Dr. Rakesh Giri, both esteemed Senior Residents. The Dean of IMS and SUM Hospital, Phulnakhara campus, Professor (Dr.) Arakhita Swain, and the Medical Superintendent, Professor (Dr.) Rajesh Kumar Lenka, provided unwavering support throughout the surgical endeavor.
