Kolkata: Medica Super specialty Hospital, the prominent private hospital chain in Eastern India, has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by successfully performing ‘Zero Contrast Rotablation Angioplasty’, the first of its kind in the region. The procedure, conducted on December 9, 2023, on 63-year-old Prashanta Bhattacharya, a retired executive residing in Behala, was led by Dr. Arindam Pande, Senior Consultant in the Department of Cardiology, in collaboration with Dr. Nandini Biswas, Senior Consultant Pulmonologist, Dr. Rohit Rungta, Senior Consultant Nephrologist, and the Cardiology Cathlab Team at Medica Superspecialty Hospital.
Mr. Bhattacharya had been grappling with worsening shortness of breath and chest discomfort, leading to orthopnea and significantly impacting his quality of life. With a history of long-term diabetes and compromised kidney function, evaluations upon admission revealed an Inferior Wall Myocardial Infarction, reduced heart pumping, and critical narrowing of the right coronary artery with severe calcifications. Urgent intervention was necessary, and the innovative Zero Contrast Angioplasty technique, guided by Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) and incorporating Rotablation technology to manage coronary calcium, was chosen due to the risk associated with conventional Contrast Angioplasty.
Post-procedure, Prashanta Bhattacharya experienced improved symptoms and a partial recovery of kidney function. Dr. Arindam Pande remarked, “Managing this case presented a unique challenge due to the patient’s diabetic condition and impaired kidney function. The Zero-contrast Rotablation Angioplasty, utilizing Intravascular Ultrasound and Rotablation, eliminates the risk of kidney damage or allergic reactions, making it particularly beneficial for patients with kidney problems or contrast dye allergies.”
Expressing his gratitude, Mr. Bhattacharya stated, “I am immensely grateful to Dr. Arindam Pande and the exceptional team for the Zero Contrast Rotablation Angioplasty. This procedure not only alleviated my symptoms but also improved my kidney function, allowing me to resume my daily activities after discharge on December 11.”
(Prof.) Dr. Rabin Chakraborty, Senior Consultant, lnterventional Cardiologist & Electrophysiologist, Senior Vice Chairman-Head of Cardiology Services at Medica Institute of Cardiac Science, commended the achievement, stating, “The Zero-Contrast angioplasty with Rotablation performed by Dr. Arindam Pande and his team is a complex coronary intervention seldom accomplished in India, requiring highly skilled cardiologists with Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) experience and Rotablation.”
Mr. Ayanabh Debgupta, Joint Managing Director of Medica Group of Hospitals, expressed satisfaction with the success of Eastern India’s first-ever Zero Contrast Rotablation Angioplasty. He stated, “This procedure stands as a testament for individuals facing heart and kidney complications, and our Cardiology department shall be able to extend this advanced treatment to more patients for timely recovery.”
