Bhubaneswar: Doctors at the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) achieved a significant milestone by completely curing a 61-year-old male patient of prostate cancer through advanced laparoscopic surgery. This success not only restored the patient’s urinary control and potency but also showcased the expertise of the surgical team, instilling hope among patients to seek treatment locally in Odisha rather than traveling to metropolitan areas.
Under the leadership of Dr. Sumanta Mishra, Associate Professor and Head of Urology at KIMS, the medical team conducted an advanced laparoscopic radical prostatectomy on the patient, who was discharged after four days.
Initially presenting symptoms suggestive of prostate issues, the patient underwent tests revealing elevated Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) levels, prompting further investigation with a TRUS-guided prostate biopsy and a PSMA PET scan. These advanced diagnostics confirmed localized prostate cancer, paving the way for targeted treatment.
The intricate laparoscopic radical prostatectomy procedure, involving complete removal of the prostate gland and cancerous cells while reestablishing urinary continuity, facilitated a swift recovery with minimal scarring, owing to the precision of laparoscopic techniques.
Previously, the lack of specialized services in Odisha necessitated patients to seek treatment in metropolitan areas. However, KIMS now stands among the select few hospitals in the state offering advanced prostate cancer treatment, thanks to state-of-the-art equipment such as PSMA PET scan, TRUS-guided biopsy, and a proficient team of urologists led by Dr. Mishra.
Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder of KIIT and KISS, commended the doctors for their groundbreaking treatment, emphasizing KIMS’s commitment to advanced patient care.
Prostate cancer ranks as the second most common cancer in men and sixth in cancer-related deaths. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are crucial for saving lives, as untreated prostate cancer can metastasize, significantly reducing lifespan and quality of life.
