Barbil: The 25th edition of the Mines Environment and Mineral Conservation Week was celebrated at Thakurani iron ore mines of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) under the auspices of the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM), Bhubaneswar. The inaugural ceremony commenced with the flag hoisting by Shri Pramod Kumar Mishra, Mines Manager at Thakurani Mines, AM/NS India, where all employees and workers pledged to uphold sustainable mining practices.
In commemoration of this event, a range of environmental awareness programs, including slogan, poster, and essay writing competitions, were organized. Students from nearby schools actively participated in these competitions. An inspection day was also conducted, guided by convenor Shri Gyana Prakash Mohapatra, DGM Mines, OMC, in the presence of Shri Mahendra Mohanty, AGM Mines, Patabeda Iron Ore Mines, MGM, and other senior officials.
On the final day of the MEMC week, various stalls showcasing Drone Survey Technology, Olympus Handheld XRF, and state-of-the-art Air Quality monitoring equipment were featured to demonstrate the technological advancements in mining operations. The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives undertaken by AM/NS India for community development and environmental management plans in the mines area were also highlighted at the stalls.
A dramatic performance by the employees of Thakurani Mines focused on sustainable mining, while cultural presentations were given by members of the Khushi Foundation and students. During the concluding function, Shri L.D. Babu, Mines Manager at Sagasahi Mines, AM/NS India, and Shri Pramod Kumar Mishra, Mines Manager at Thakurani Mines, AM/NS India, emphasized the imperative of sustainable mining for the brighter future of the region.
